The anterior cruciate ligament damage causes

The anterior cruciate ligament is a fibrous structure located in the knee joint center. Combining the femur and tibia, it acts as a limiter of combined movements and the main stabilizer of the bone-articular joint. The cause of ACL damage is the circular motion of the knee with a fixed foot position. There are several factors that can create a similar situation:

  • traffic accident;      

  • downhill skiing;     

  • side impact to the thigh, the tibia or knee area;     

  • unsuccessful landing after a jump;     

  • body turning during sharp braking.     

The frequency of ACL damage in the overall injuries structure is 30-90%. Professional athletes (snowboarders, skiers, gymnasts, handball players, soccer players, volleyball players, etc.) are especially susceptible to sprains and ruptures of the anterior knee ligament. Women with high estrogen levels are more vulnerable to injuries of the ligamentous apparatus. This sexual hormone weakens the strength of connective tissue fibers and causes the weakness (softening) of the ligamentous apparatus.

Recovery options

A number of characteristic symptoms accompanies the ACL traumatic damage. There is a crunch or click at the moment of partial or complete rupture. Due to excessive displacement of the tibia forward, the knee joint becomes unstable, discomfort appears during the walk. With a separate injury, pain is absent. The appearance of pain indicates about a combined damage involving menisci and other intraarticular structures.

Within a few hours, edema develops, which significantly limits the bending and straightening of the knee. In 1-2 weeks, negative symptoms often completely disappear.
