Recovery and rehabilitation program after a hip fracture

The importance of rehabilitation

The main symptom of a hip fracture is pain. In a motionless state, it causes moderate discomfort, and when moving or pressing it intensifies. A typical diagnostic sign is a “stuck heel” (inability to lift it above the bed on its own). Shortening of the affected limb is noticeable (up to 3-4 cm). In the horizontal position, the foot turns outward. When striking the heel, the pain radiates to the groin and to the area of the hip joint.

A dual-projection femur X-ray is performed to detect and recognize the injury. In especially severe and doubtful cases, CT, scintigraphy or MRI are prescribed.

The main culprit for a fracture of the femoral neck is a blow directed parallel to the straightened leg. The cause of such an injury can be a fall from a height, engaging in extreme sports or traffic accidents. However, it is more common in old age, due to a decrease in bone density.

People bones with systemic osteoporosis become so fragile that they can break even with an awkward movement of the limb, getting up from a chair, turning in bed and any other minimal impact.

Fracture of the femoral neck is considered to be the most difficult damage, entailing severe, sometimes irreversible, consequences. Forced immobility and helplessness often lead to neurosis and depression. Elderly patients are especially affected, for whom surgical treatment is contraindicated. With a hip fracture, recovery periods without surgery are delayed for a long time.

Prolonged bed rest and lack of exercise are fraught with such serious risks and complications:

  • Muscle atrophy;

  • Venous stasis;

  • Pressure sores;

  • Bowel problems (constipation);

  • Vascular thrombosis;

  • Congestive pneumonia;

  • Necrosis of the femoral head.

The most serious consequences leading to the patient death are considered to be stroke, thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery and acute heart failure.

Rehabilitation program

Regardless of the treatment nature, the recovery period plays a decisive role on the difficult path to recovery. Full rehabilitation after a hip fracture without surgery or after arthroplasty is not always possible at home. The Dr. Blum Center specializes on the recovery of patients who have suffered injuries of the musculoskeletal system and surgery to replace the hip joint. For the correction of disturbed physiological functions for more than 30 years, a unique author’s technique based on the principles of clinical biomechanics has been successfully used. It was developed by an expert in functional movement, MD, professor Eugene Blum.

The author’s rehabilitation system is based on the geometric symmetry of the human body (its anatomical unity). Correctional work is preceded by biomechanical diagnostics aimed at identifying weak links in the body.

At the Dr. Blum’s Physiotherapy and Biomechanics Center, after a hip fracture, a personalized program is prepared for each patient, and precise parameters and amplitudes of movement are set. Eccentric training allows you to activate the target deep muscles that cannot be worked out normally. The author’s technique allows you to turn on the processes of regeneration, eliminate muscle and osteoarticular imbalance and asymmetry caused by the disease, restore normal spatial relationships and the anatomical unity of the musculoskeletal system.

Advantages of the Dr. Blum's method:

● accelerated body recovery from its own resources;

● an individual approach and a phased problem solution;

● eccentric (inferior) training regimen with precise effects on target muscle groups;

● low energy body consumption to obtain significant results;

● a vitality feeling and a surge of strength after the workout;

● development of stress tolerance and resistance to stress;

● lack of medicine therapy and surgical intervention;

Dr. Blum’s Center is equipped with unique, patented training facilities. To solve rehabilitation problems of varying complexity, 800 training devices are used, which allow setting the exact metered address load on the target segments of the musculoskeletal system. An integrated multidisciplinary approach allows solving complex problems that lie at the intersection of specialized medical discipline.

Due to the targeted impact on the affected area, the rehabilitation takes place as fully as possible, the recovery time after a hip fracture and the operation is reduced. We give our patients a real chance to return to a full life.
